The Beloved Community Center of Greensboro, North Carolina (BCC) is a community-based, grassroots empowerment oriented organization rooted in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of proactive struggles for racial and economic justice, democracy and beloved community, the BCC is committed to grassroots empowerment, especially among minorities, within the context and spirit of forging a beloved community for all resident
Drawing deeply from the life and work of movement leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ella Baker in conjunction with over 50 years of connected struggle in and around Greensboro; the Beloved Community Center of Greensboro’s connection to the social justice movement started long before it’s official founding 20 years ago. Officially founded in 1991 by Rev. Barbara Dua, Assistant Pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Rev. Z. Holler, Pastor of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and Rev. Nelson N. Johnson, Pastor of Faith Community Church; the BCC has continued to pursue its mission and dream of building of an inclusive community that uplifts the dignity, worth and enormous potential of all. Through community building, community organizing, advocacy and other forms of coalition building, the BCC continues to work towards building a “Beloved Community.”
The mission of the Beloved Community Center of Greensboro is to foster and model a spirit of community based on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of a "Beloved Community." In this spirit, we envision and work toward social and economic relations that affirm and realize the equality, dignity, worth and potential of every person.
